This article aims at contributing for the debate about external strategy patterns in Asia and Latin America during the period of financial globalization. The paper stresses the huge differences between the performance of these two regions and  briefly sums up the literature on financial integration, but its main contribution is a set of indicators, developed on external assets and liabilities data, regarding the most relevant economies of each region between 1990 and 2004. If analyzed in a complementary way, those indicators support the theory which identifies a pattern based on financial relations in Latin America (with negative outcomes), in contrast with the Asian pattern, based on productive and trade relations (with more positive consequences).
