Resumo: The article focuses on the intellectual and cultural Brazilian and Argentinean contexts in the 1980s, especially on democratic transitions in those countries. It looks for to make a tour on the dictatorial regimes' crisis, the amnesty laws and the return of the intellectuals after the dictatorship period. The difficulties, the debates and controversies in cultural circles around issues like the role of intellectuals in politics, the value of democracy and defense of socialism, are the keys that organize the article.
