Resumo: | This paper discusses the relationship between Euripides’ Trojan Women, from 415 B. C., and the history of Athens, specifically its victory in Melos, in the Peloponnesian War. In order to do so, we examine Euripides’ play as well as other ancient sources. We assume that, because the tragedy has a deeply historical character, an interpretation that does not seek to understand this character will misunderstand the text. Resigning the heroes, the crimes and the excesses of war, the poet gives to the people more than a broken mirror, which reflects what had happened in Melos. He gives also a prophetic image of the catastrophe that will be the Sicilian Expedition. |
