Resumo: The aim of this article is to analyze the Roman Ceremonial, produced at the beginning of the 14th century by Cardinal Jacopo Gaetano Stefaneschi. The main question is: the use of precise time indicators – day, month and year –, and specific coronation and canonization ceremonies to refer to the liturgy, do they allow us to understand the role of Cardinal Stefaneschi as a historian? The hypothesis is that this cardinal had a predilection for recording ceremonies and events related to the papacy in Rome, even when the popes resided in Avignon. The research is part of studies on the writing of stories and on the composition of the College of Cardinals in the Middle Ages. We intend to contribute to the understanding of the disputes related to the return of the popes to Rome. Our conclusions indicate the complexity of the act of writing about facts and characters from the author’s past and/or present. These elements indicate that Jacopo Stefaneschi wrote stories based on what he witnessed as a privileged eyewitness in ceremonies that took place between 1300-1330.

These elements indicate that Jacopo Stefaneschi wrote stories based on what he witnessed as a privileged eyewitness in ceremonies that took place between 1300-1330.O objetivo deste artigo é analisar o Cerimonial Romano produzido no início do século XIV pelo cardeal Jacopo Gaetano Stefaneschi.
