Impressions about Porto Alegre at the turn of the century and the early decades of the twentieth century: texts and contexts

Resumo: This article reviews representations of the old modern city of Porto Alegre, searching for an approach of that imaginary. Considering the impressions of the chroniclers and historical references, interpretations are made from the concept of culture proposed by Geertz – in which the data are seen as relative readings. It is also about observing the tension between the idealized “modern project” (and Luiz Antonio Gloger Maroneze e Cristina Ennes da Silva developed in part) with pictures and speeches that follow other paths and make the historical interpretation more complex. We emphasize, on the other hand, that a look in return to the modern is a need for understanding the contemporary city, considering that the speech which projected that city is in crisis, and other logic reorganize the current imagery.

Partindo principalmente das impressões dos cronistas e de referências históricas, realizam-se interpretações a partir do conceito de cultura proposto por Geertz - em que os próprios dados são entendidos como leituras relativas. Trata-se também aqui de observar as tensões entre o “projeto moderno” idealizado (e em parte realizado) com imagens e discursos que seguem outros caminhos e complexificam a interpretação histórica.
