Resumo: | After long negotiations between Brazilian and Portuguese authorities, they finally agreed to transfer D. Pedro I’s remains to Brazil as a highlight of the 150th Anniversary of Brazil’s Independence from Portugal celebrated in 1972. However, the evolution of this diplomatic agreement and its implications towards the dynamics of Luso-Brazilian relations constitutes a remarkable lack of historiographical production in both countries. Therefore, we intend to analyze how the return of the “hero” of Brazilian independence impacted the interactions between Brazil and Portugal in that global context of the “Second Cold War” (HOBSBAWM, 1995, p. 192). The return of the “Perpetual Defender” sought to symbolize the union among the two “Lusophone Homelands” under the shelter of authoritarian political regimes. In fact, it did contribute to boost some aspects of transnational relations between the governments of Garrastazu Médici and Marcelo Caetano. But it did not correspond to the strengthening of their ties. Precisely because Brazilian foreign policy started to follow a nationalist, neutralist, anticolonial and pacifist line within that bipolar order |
