“That’s how history is made, that’s how it must be taught”: Manoel Bomfim and historical instruction in primary education (1899-1930)

Resumo: The scope of this article is Manoel Bonfim’s conception of historical instruction. When writing about the methodology of education, in the years of 1915, Manoel Bonfim defended a renewal of the teaching of history, in order to make it more attractive for children and more efficient in the process of civic formation. Despite being an intellectual considerably analyzed in the historiographical sphere and in the production of school books, Manoel Bonfim is still little discussed with regard to contributions about the teaching of history. In this sense, this article has as main source the book “Lições de Pedagogia”, in comparison with “The Method of Tests”, the opinion of the compendium of History of America and the historiographical production of the author. From this analysis of these vestiges, I seek to understand the author’s conception of history, thought in the dimension of teaching, that is, of his understanding of historical instruction.

Ao escrever sobre a metodologia da educação, nos idos de 1915, Manoel Bonfim defendeu uma renovação do ensino de história, no intuito de torná-lo mais atrativo para as crianças e mais eficiente no processo de formação cívica. Apesar de ser um intelectual consideravelmente analisado em âmbito historiográfico e da produção de livros escolares, Manoel Bonfim ainda é pouco discutido no tocante às contribuições acerca do ensino de história. Neste sentido, este artigo tem como fonte principal o livro “Lições de Pedagogia”, em cotejo com “O Methodo dos Tests”, com o parecer do compêndio de História da América e com a produção historiográfica do autor.
