Resumo: The text discusses the political instabilities that were taking place in Pernambuco, a province located in the Northern region of Brazil, at the time of the Old Portuguese Regime’s crisis. In 1817, a bloody insurrection motivated mainly by excessive taxes, high prices, and corruption of the Portuguese court challenged the monarch and instituted a republic inspired by the North American revolution and which was the first trace of decolonization. The new political ideas of 1820 brought a culture of freedom that questioned the absolute monarchy and eventually led Brazil to break with Portugal in 1822: a victory of the centralist group that undermined Pernambuco’s autonomist expectations. The centralist group aligned itself with the Rio de Janeiro group, led by José Bonifácio, who thought of an independence with the power centered in D. Pedro, whereas Gervásio Pires’ group, formed by people who fought in 1817, had autonomist thoughts, i.e. they followed the federalist model of the revolution.
