O povo nas ruas: culturas, disputas e alianças políticas em Pernambuco (1820-1822)

This article analyzes the scenario of the Pernambuco province between 1820 and 1822, observing how the population behaved during the political turmoil that took place in the period. For those born and raised in the Old Regime society, the novelties arising from the Liberal Revolution of 1820 caused astonishment and chatter. In 1820 and 1821 the liberals struggled to remove Luís do Rego Barreto from the provincial government and implement a Provisional Junta, as had occurred in Portugal during the revolution. In 1822 the clashes were between the Junta and the two main centers of power: Rio de Janeiro, seat of the regency, and Lisbon, seat of the Cortes. Press reports about them generated rumors in various places and street demonstrations. These uprising were attended not only by the elites, but also the people and enslaved, who marched shouting slogans and singing political verses, thus showing that the masses were not completely excluded and that they participated in the political scenario at the time of Independence.
