The discourse of old age and aging, from the Elderly Living Center in a municipality “C”

This article aimed to recognize and analyze the discourse of aging and old age manifested in the portfolio produced by the Senior Center of a town in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais. The portfolio analysis was supported by Patrick Charaudeau's Semiolinguistic Theory. The discursive analysis revealed the contradictions that involve discussions about aging in society in general. On one hand, it was found that the document is a discourse that recognizes, understands and gives voice to the conceptions of aging and old age conveyed in scientific articles, in national legislation and by organizations such as PAHO and WHO. Thus, it was found that the portfolio contributes to the construction of a discourse in which aging and old age are redefined through socialization, learning opportunities, leisure practice and physical and cultural activities distributed in the various workshops and educational spaces. On the other hand, sometimes it also seems to resort to other discourses produced in daily life, more specifically based on common creed, in which they end up reflecting a concept of aging that does not consider its biopsychosocial and multifactorial aspect. And in this way, it reproduces a social discourse of old age and aging in which socio-discursive imaginaries characterized by disease, dependence, social isolation, disability, inactivity, losses of heterogeneous dimension belonging to the experience of old age still echo.
