Resumo: The paper discusses the utility of the concept of linearity in the analysis of media, specially those presenting texts, as well as its validity as a tool to comprehend the subjective and cultural effects of communication technologies. References are made to different canonical authors in communication research. The case of audio books and audio readers is approached in the light of linearity. Finally, the pertinence of the concept of linearity in communication and cultural analysis is questioned. The results indicate several problems involved in using linearity and its correlate concepts, which implicates that their use should be avoided.

São mobilizados diferentes autores relativamente canônicos no campo da comunicação e é feita uma abordagem do caso dos audiolivros e dos audioleitores em sua relação com a ideia de linearidade. Problematiza-se, por fim, a eficácia e utilidade dessa ideia e de sua correlata, não linearidade, para dar conta do modo como a escrita e os textos produzem efeitos na cultura.
