Resumo: Since its very beginnings, the concept of mass has been close to the theory of communication alone or in several idiomatic expressions. The present article intends to study the history of such concept as well as to think about its possible uses in the present stage of development of communication technologies. Therefore we shall propose a dialog with the many uses the word had gained throughout its history, whethear used by functionalists of critics, as well as to bring new perspectives for a current reflection of its use.

El presente trabajo busca contribuir para una reflexión sobre la historia de este concepto bien como pensar su posible uso en la actual etapa de desarrollo de las tecnologías de comunicación. Para eso, buscaremos dialogar con los usos del término, presentes en autores de referencia, sean funcionalistas ó críticos, bien como traer nuevas perspectivas que propicien una reflexión sobre la actualidad del concepto.Original e caro aos estudiosos da teoria da comunicação desde seus primórdios, o conceito de massa, bem como diversas expressões idiomáticas em que o mesmo aparece, encerra já uma longa história. O presente artigo busca contribuir para a reflexão sobre a história desse conceito bem como pensar seu possível uso no atual estágio de desenvolvimento das tecnologias de comunicação.
