The analogue capture format in contemporary historical films: a study of the features released between 2013 and 2019

Resumo: This paper aims to analyze the role of the analog format in historical genre films produced in recent years. To achieve this, we took as a corpus the 700 films with the highest annual box office sales between 2013 and 2019, identifying their capture format and genre. Using an exploratory-descriptive methodology based on the information available on the Box Office Mojo and Internet Movie Database websites, the data collected in the research verified that while there was an accelerated adherence to the digital capture format in non-historical films throughout the analyzed period, the number of historical movies recorded on film remained unchanged. We suggest that the choice of analog format in historical films is not only due to aesthetic preferences, but also due to the “effect of past” that the device carries.

Para isso, tomamos como corpus os 700 filmes com maior destaque de bilheteria anual entre 2013 e 2019, identificando o formato de captação e o gênero dos mesmos. Utilizando uma metodologia exploratória-descritiva a partir das informações disponibilizadas nos sites Box Office Mojo e Internet Movie Database, os dados coletados na pesquisa verificaram que enquanto houve uma acelerada adesão ao formato de captação digital em filmes de gênero não-histórico ao longo do período analisado, a quantidade de filmes históricos gravados em película permaneceu sem grande variação.
