Recording information: consciousness, materiality and the writing code

Writing is a powerful invention for recording and sharing information that changed human consciousness, giving it a new historical dimension linked to a vectorial and linear conception of time. In this study, the writing is analyzed from the methods used to record information (registration, overwriting and prescription) and the codes employed during this process (pictorial, alphanumeric or binary), each of which is linked to a concept of representation (characters, types and figures) that are registered through different techniques and material culture (tools, machines and machinery). It is concluded that each method of registration is connected to a different kind of awareness of the world, time, and social relationships, and that any change in one of those aspects produces changes in all the others.
