In a bibliographic research the Santos basin was characterized in the geographic, structural, stratigraphic, historical and economic aspects (related to the prospectivity of hydrocarbons). Extension, location and classification of the basin are presented; the main structural features the basin formations; depositional environments that define the history of the basin and focus on events of importance from the point of view of hydrocarbon exploration in the basin. The geophysical method of reflection seismic is briefly described by its theoretical basis, data acquisition technology, data processing steps and interpretation characteristics. As a case study, we chose an article that presents an impact structure occurred in the Upper Cretaceous in the Santos basin identified through 3D reflection seismic. In order to make the text of the monograph self-sufficient, results from bibliographic studies on the morphology of impact structures are presented. At the end of the monograph are attached documents, from the ANP, illustrating the exploration of hydrocarbons in the Santos basin: stratigraphic chart, stratigraphic section, map of Santos basin with blocks auctioned by the ANP until round 8, and the ANP concessions table in Santos basin.
