Resumo: In 2002, on the initiative of Catholics of the city of Natal, opened the process of beatification of Father João Maria Cavalcanti de Brito (1848-1904). Our paper discusses the presence of Father João Maria in the narrative of Monsignor Alves Landim, constructor of the first biography of this priest, in 1935. Our hypothesis is that in 1935, the crisis moment of family organizations of the Rio Grande do Norte and of the Communist Levant, emerged Catholic identity in Natal based in the Father João Maria, influencied by the writings of Monsignor Alves Landim. We are considering the existence of an effectual history (GADAMER, 2004) and the importance of the classical texts of the Aesthetics of Reception (GUMBRECHT, 2004; ISER, 1996). Our historical sources: the writings of Alves Landim and the Newspapers A Ordem and A República and books of the meetings of the Irmandade Santíssimo Sacramento and the Irmandade Bom Jesus dos Passos.

Nosso trabalho discute a presença do padre João Maria na narrativa do monsenhor Alves Landim, autor da primeira biografia do referido padre, em 1935. A nossa hipótese é a de que em 1935, momento de crise das organizações familiares norte-rio-grandenses e do Levante Comunista, surgiu em Natal uma identidade católica pautada no padre João Maria, no que o monsenhor Landim foi fundamental.
