Facial trauma represents an important segment due to its high incidence in the population. So, recognizing and characterizing victims by external causes and those with facial trauma is critical to the improvement of public services. This study aimed to evaluate the social profile and the cause of facial trauma in patients treated at the Hospital Walfredo Gurgel (Natal, Brazil) from 2013 to 2015. The study is characterized by being an individuated cross-sectional. We retrospectively evaluated data from 524 medical records. For data analysis we used the chi-square test and Fisher exact test, with significance level of 5%. The prevalence ratio (PR) was also analyzed with 95% confidence interval. It was found that there was a higher prevalence of men (76.4%), from 20 to 29 years (22.5%), brown (48.3%), whose trauma occurred in urban areas (67.2% ). There was significant difference between males who were from 20 to 29 years (p <0.001). By associating the etiology of trauma with gender it was found that there was significant difference between males and car accidents (p <0.004), female and falls (p <0.001) and males and cycling accidents (p <0.001). When performing the prevalence ratio, males have more chances of suffering a car accident, cycling and sports compared to females, who have more risk of falling. The most prevalent type of injury was blunt cut (72.6%) and the classification of closed fracture (74.3%). Thus, there is a greater need to educate drivers about traffic laws and to structure services to promote health.
