Resumo: This work consists of the geotechnical characterization of the sand of the beach of Ponta Negra, main tourist point of the city of Natal and the state of Rio Grande do Norte, where is the main postcard of both, Morro do Careca. This characterization is indispensable for the region, since the aforementioned beach presents problems as to the advance of the sea, because of this, the city of Natal announced that it will make the beach fattening to solve this adversity, and in this procedure it is imperative that the diameter of the sand that will be deposited in the beach of Ponta Negra is compatible with the original sand of the same. The methodology was based on laboratory tests that determined the physical indexes of the studied sand. The research was divided in steps, field recognition and definition of the representative points of collection of the material in homogeneous stretches, being essential a walk along the study area, and another stage, laboratory, with the accomplishment of the tests of specific mass, sieving and maximum and minimum void indices. The beach of Ponta Negra presented sand, predominantly, thin, subangular and soft.

Essa caracterização é indispensável para a região, visto que, a praia já mencionada apresenta problemas quanto ao avanço do mar, por causa disso, a prefeitura do Natal anunciou que fará o engordamento da praia para solucionar essa adversidade, e nesse procedimento é imprescindível que o diâmetro da areia que será depositada na praia de Ponta Negra seja compatível com a areia original da mesma. A metodologia foi baseada em ensaios laboratoriais que determinaram os índices físicos da areia estudada. A pesquisa foi dividida em etapas, de reconhecimento de campo e definição dos pontos representativos de coleta do material em trechos homogêneos, sendo imprescindível um caminhamento ao longo da área de estudo, e outra etapa, laboratorial, com a realização dos ensaios de massa específica, peneiramento e índices de vazios máximos e mínimos.
