Many areas of knowledge have dedicated themselves to attend a recent and increasingly urgent demand for studies on natural disasters, especially from the recognition of global warming and the evidence of its effects on climatic changes. As these phenomenon and their consequences are directly related to the functioning of cities, it is important that the area of Architecture and Urbanism participate actively in these discussions, perforce marked as interdisciplinary. Putting itself in this theme, among the many possibilities of natural disasters for studying, this monograph dedicates itself specifically to the matter of flooding — once they are now causing large losses worldwide —, having as special cutout the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Is considered that the brazilian urban growth model is inducing to a disruptive urban occupation of land areas, susceptible to processes of natural instability, mostly, by populations economically underfunded and, thus, doubly marginalized. Face to this understanding, came up the questioning that guided this work: what architects and urbanists in Natal need to know to propose actions that prevent/minimize the effects of flooding in the city? Therefore, the TFG general aim is: discuss the elements that heighten Natal‘s vulnerability to flooding, so to subsidize the actions of architects and urbanists in the planning of the city. Therefore, documental analysis of disasters records was made, and readings of hydrological and geological data, and meteorological historical series, taking as methodological procedure risk interpretation systematics suggested in bibliographies plus another, made by the author. In general, it was verified that: (i) the process of adaptation and risk prevention finds to be in an early stage; (ii) the overflows are apparently more noticed than flooding, once they are more broadcasted by local media; (iii) all citizens (inhabitants and visitors), in some way, find themselves vulnerable to flooding; (iv) the answers to be traced must be implemented considering the systemic cluster of the city, and not as isolated and palliative measures. The research also showed that: (a) associated natural disasters can have a capacity to cause major damages in environmentally vulnerable places; (b) the same danger of flooding matrix can also be used to the understanding of the overflows; (c) places that are not directly affected by a risk can also be affected by the disaster effects occurring in a vulnerable place. Besides these specific issues, the monograph contributes with the area under study by materializing a general framework of reported disasters in the city of Natal and by proposing, schematically, a systematic interpretation of direct and indirect risks
