At the global and national levels, child labor is a persistent fact with a long historical trajectory, which although in the last two decades have shown a significant reduction also continues as a current challenge. In this sense in Rio Grande do Norte also followed this trend with significant progress in reducing child labor. Still it is an active problem, especially on Metropolitan Region of Natal (RMN), where just look around and find her children and adolescents exercising numerous professional activities. Thus, the aim of this paper is to present an overview of the occupational status of children and adolescents and address its concept, causes and effects as well as their size and behavior in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, showing the districts within the metropolitan area of Natal, from the Population Census conducted in 2010. For this, the methodology consisted initially of a literature review with reading texts, including some theoretical interpretations related to the issue of child labor. We then carried the collection of secondary data, where an overview was drawn on early work in state and RMN, portraying their specific separately in each spatiality, especially in the presentation of data on aspects related to age, gender, color and race, household situation, socioeconomic status of families, activities and occupations and education. The results showed that the main characteristics of children and adolescents who were in work situations were basically the same for the Rio Grande do Norte and for living in the Metropolitan Region of Natal. Thus, child labor was exercised mostly by boys who were aged between 16 and 17 years old, were declared as black or brown, lived in the city, exercised non-agricultural activities in the position of employees in Overall, with a working day between 15-39 hours per week and not attending school. Therefore, it is concluded that, although the incidence of child labor to be decreasing, still, a large number of children and adolescents continue to work. Thus, the child labor eradication process can be more effective the higher the opportunities created for families who are in vulnerable situations and such an initiative requires the completion of targeted, but also it is necessary cultural changes of a structural nature in society.
