Resumo: The research intends to investigate the determinants of the demand for residential real estate for purchase in the city of Natal / RN, using as sample interviews conducted between December 2017 and January 2018, with real estate agents employed in ten real estate companies located in the capital of Large northern river. It takes the work of Ferreira (2017) on consumption in Brazil, who, among other authors, used Veblen (1988), more precisely the book "The Theory of the Idle Class" in his approach to the subject. Based on the author's work, the hypothesis that structured the monograph was that decisions taken at the time of purchase of the residential property, besides being affected by income, are also related to subjective factors such as emulation, status, purchasing power, will and desire. The results of the interviews indicate that the items location / neighborhood and value of the property have high weight in the decisions of the plaintiffs of property for purchase. There is also a proximity between the result about the importance of the location / neighborhood attribute and the percentage of respondents who consider that their clients are mainly driven by the search for status when they make demands on the characteristics of the properties they intend to acquire.

Ela toma por base o trabalho de Ferreira (2017) sobre o consumo no Brasil, que, entre outros autores, recorreu a Veblen (1988), mais precisamente a obra “A Teoria da Classe Ociosa”, em sua abordagem do tema. Com base no trabalho da autora, a hipótese que estruturou a monografia foi que as decisões tomadas no ato da compra do imóvel residencial, além de serem afetadas pela renda, estão igualmente relacionadas aos fatores subjetivos como a emulação, status, poder aquisitivo, vontade e desejo. Os resultados das entrevistas indicam que os itens localização/bairro e valor do imóvel têm elevado peso nas decisões dos demandantes de imóvel para compra.
