Resumo: This study presents the theoretical basis for the steel structure design. Different structural alternatives are discussed for a metallic marquee, which was executed to a school entrance in Joao Pessoa/Paraíba. All steps of a steel structure project are shown and three different models for design are compared. The first one treats with the height of elements; the second one with their thickness and, finally, in third model, lateral locking system are placed. The main conclusion is that for structures with predominant bending stresses, the insertion of lateral locking in the main profiles is a good structural alternative to be chosen.

São apresentadas diferentes alternativas de modelos de dimensionamento para uma marquise metálica projetada com perfis W, executada para a entrada de uma escola em João Pessoa. São apontados desde as etapas de elaboração de um projeto estrutural até uma análise comparativa entre três modelos diferentes de dimensionamento. O primeiro modelo consiste no aumento da altura dos perfis metálicos que não apresentaram capacidade resistiva suficiente. Já o segundo modelo apresenta como alternativa a substituição dos perfis não conformes por outros com maiores espessuras. Finalmente, o terceiro modelo consiste na inserção de travamentos laterais na estrutura.
