Resumo: Surfing is an already consolidated sport that drives a millionaire industry. Brazil is already among the 3 largest powers in the sport along with the United States and Australia. Surf is characterized as a adventure sport and demands a huge range of physical valences being a sport of complex patterns of movement, with more progressive maneuvers increasing. It is practiced in diverse types of wave, tides and bottoms. There is an expressive incidence of lesions with the most diverse causes. The purpose of the study was to understand the types and causes of injuries that can be experienced by surfers in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Type research: descriptive case study with intentional sample, semi-structured interview was used to collect the data. In this work, the types and causes of injuries occurred in 19 surfers in Rio Grande do Norte were cataloged. There were 8 types of injuries and 8 other complains about pain and inflamations due the surf sessions, occurring 86 times: lacerations (20.93%), contusions (8.14%), strains (8.14%), sunburns (6.98%), dislocations (1.16%), knee pain (6.98%) and shoulders (5.81%), burns by living water (10.47%), ACL rupture (1.16%), spinal injury (1.16%), (1.16%), lumbago (9.3%), thoracic dorsalgia (2.33%), cervicalgia (4.65%) and catfish stings (1.16%) and hedgehogs (2, 33%). (22.9%), contact with sea bottom (22.09%), contact with marine animals (13.95%), isometry in trunk hyperextension (12,79) , maneuvers (10.47%), sun exposure (6.98%), repetitive movements (5.81%), collision with other surfers (3.49%), collision with the wave (1.16%) and no causes were found in 4.65% of occurrences. In conclusion, most of the study participants have already suffered some kind of injury, with lacerations being the most frequent type of injury, with lower limbs being the most affected body portion and the main etiological agent being the practitioner's own board.
