Análise comparativa de dois métodos de avaliação da discrepância de modelo na dentadura mista

Introduction: The aim of this study was to compare two methods of analysis of mixed dentition (Moyers and Tanaka-Johnston) in order to find out whether both methods have the same degree of prediction. Materials and Methods: It was cross-sectional and experimental study with a sample of 30 dental casts. Dental measurements were made using a digital caliper with a precision of 0.03 mm. For the calibration of the examiner, 10 pairs of models were randomly selected and the reliability of the measurement process of the variables was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (1.00). The data were submitted to the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and then applied the paired t-test for the upper arch and the Wilcoxon test for the lower arch, considering a significance level of 95% to both archs. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the two methods of assessing mixed dentition for the lower arch (p = 0.011). However, despite the statistical significance presented by the test, this difference was less than 0.5 mm, which is considered clinically negligible. In the upper arch there was no significant difference between the two methods of assessment (p = 0.837). Conclusion: Both methods have the same capacity of measurement prediction of the mesiodistal size of canines, first and second premolar that will erupt.
