Resumo: Hospitalization causes restriction in patients submitted to this condition. Deficits involve the osteomioarticular and cardiorespiratory systems, interfering with the functionality and strength of these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional status of hospitalized patients in the medical clinic sector and to establish a correlation between different assessment instruments. It is a cross-sectional study, performed at the Regional Dr. Mariano Coelho Hospital, Currais Novos/RN. Functional Status Scale (FSS), Functional Independence Measure (MIF), and Physical Function ICU Test (PFIT) and Medical Research Council (MRC) were used to evaluate functional and muscular strength. The variables were analyzed according to mean, standard deviation and frequencies, in addition to normality test by Kolmogorov-Smirnov and correlation between variables by the Pearson test, according to Graphpad Prism 5.0 with significance level of p<0.05. Twenty-four patients (58.3%) and 10 women (41.6%) had a mean age of 63.1 (±8.9) years and a mean length of hospitalization of 4.6 (±2.6) days. There was functional deficit in all scales, except in the MIF, presenting independence means for both domains. There was a positive and strong correlation between MRC, FSS, PFIT and MIF (r=0.74, r=0.88, r=0.71) p<0.0001 and between the FSS, PFIT and MIF r=0.85, r=0.82, r=0.81), p<0.0001, respectively. Between the PFIT and hospitalization time there was a negative and moderate correlation (r=-0.41), p=0.046, the others did not present a correlation. Hospitalization had an impact on the functionality and strength of these patients. The instruments showed a correlation between themselves and sensitivity for the identification of impairments, contributing to the elaboration of preventive interventions for these alterations.
