O Cinema no Front: Frank Capra, nacionalismo e propaganda na Segunda Guerra Mundial

Resumo: The purpose of this work is to analyze the discursive elements of the film series Why We Fight, produced by Frank Capra between 1942 and 1945, shortly after the official entry of the USA into World War II, and its connections with american nationalism. To this end, we will present the director, indicating some of his worldviews and social and political positions, we also will talk about the narrative construction and the filmic elements of the documentaries, and we will focus on its rhetorical elements and its social and discursive functions. Besides that, this work shows comparative elements, bringing Capra?s movies in different phases of production and movies of others directors that made films in the same time of Capra, listing technical features that can be compared with the italian-american director offering a more solid base of analysis. Such effort helps us to understand the power of cultural objects (in our case, cinema) as a field of analysis of social and military disputes, as well as their use for the propagation and legitimation of State policies.

Para tal, apresentaremos o diretor, indicando algumas de suas vis?es de mundo e posicionamentos sociais e pol?ticos, falaremos sobre a constru??o narrativa e os elementos f?lmicos dos document?rios analisados e nos deteremos em seus elementos ret?ricos e suas fun??es sociais e discursivas. Al?m disso, este material anal?tico apresenta elementos comparativos, trazendo filmes de Capra em outras fases de sua vida e de outros diretores que produziram no mesmo per?odo, elencando caracter?sticas que podem ser compar?veis com o trabalho do diretor ?talo-americano e oferecendo uma base mais s?lida de an?lise. Besides that, this work shows comparative elements, bringing Capra?s movies in different phases of production and movies of others directors that made films in the same time of Capra, listing technical features that can be compared with the italian-american director offering a more solid base of analysis. Such effort helps us to understand the power of cultural objects (in our case, cinema) as a field of analysis of social and military disputes, as well as their use for the propagation and legitimation of State policies.
