Resumo: The increase in the generation of waste from animal production is a concern for the agricultural sector, which increasingly seeks sustainable alternatives for its disposal. These wastes are promising to be used in agriculture as organic fertilizers or soil conditioners. However, they can be a source of pathogenic microorganisms and antimicrobial resistance determinants. Thus, when not responsibly managed, they can contaminate the soil and vegetables used for human consumption, resulting in a risk to public health. In this sense, it is recommended to search for management alternatives that reduce or eliminate pathogens and undesirable compounds to guarantee the biological safety of their use as fertilizer. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the effect of composting animal waste in reducing the microbiological, parasitic load, and antimicrobial resistance determinants. For this purpose, a composting essay with horse bedding, and organic poultry litter, and conventional poultry litter was set up. The samples were collected at 0, 14, 32, 60, 90, and 125 days. We evaluated the presence of Salmonella sp., the thermotolerant coliforms counting, and the presence of helminth eggs. The MALDI-TOF proteomic technique identified bacteria isolated during the composting process, and then the disk diffusion assay was performed for phenotypic detection of antimicrobial resistance. Salmonella sp. was absent in the raw wastes until the end of composting. Composting was effective in eliminating helminth eggs and reducing thermotolerant coliforms; however, the final composts showed a higher thermotolerant coliform load than required by the current legislation of organic farming. One hundred fifty-eight bacterial strains were isolated during the composting process of the three wastes. The Enterobacteriaceae family was the most abundant, and Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli were the species with the highest percentage in the wastes and those with a multi-resistance profile. The bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae and P. mirabilis, both with pathogenic potential, were found throughout the composting process. Composting was effective in eliminating strains of E. coli but ineffective in eliminating strains of P. mirabilis. Therefore, even though the use of animal wastes in agriculture is a sustainable alternative, the presence of pathogenic organisms with a multi-resistance profile represents a risk to public health. They can increase pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in soils and vegetables and consequently favor their dissemination and transfer to commensal and pathogenic bacteria of humans and animals. Thus, this work reinforces the importance of management strategy surveys focusing on reducing and/or eliminating contaminants from animal wastes, aiming at their safe use in agriculture, and promoting discussion about the parameters of quality and biological safety of these wastes

Thus, this work reinforces the importance of management strategy surveys focusing on reducing and/or eliminating contaminants from animal wastes, aiming at their safe use in agriculture, and promoting discussion about the parameters of quality and biological safety of these wastesO aumento da gera??o de res?duos provenientes da produ??o animal ? uma preocupa??o para o setor agr?cola que busca cada vez mais alternativas sustent?veis para sua disposi??o. Submitted by Jorge Silva (jorgelmsilva@ufrrj.br) on 2023-09-25T14:24:33Z No. of bitstreams: 1 2021 - Paula Fernanda Alves Ferreira.pdf: 1765352 bytes, checksum: 4a85214d560c160e6ea862bd12511870 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2023-09-25T14:24:33Z (GMT). description The increase in the generation of waste from animal production is a concern for the agricultural sector, which increasingly seeks sustainable alternatives for its disposal.
