Resumo: The external otitis is one of most common diseases affecting the auditory channel in dogs. This disease is painful and causes extreme discomfort, demanding immediate treatment. The aim of this study is to describe clinical and microbiological patterns of the external otitis in domestic dogs contaminated in the environment, and to assess the in vitro sensibility or clinical efficacy in vivo of main antibiotics used in the treatment of this disease. The study was conducted on 36 animals, totalizing 72 flush ears swabs to sample auricular secretions in animals with symptoms of otitis. Of the samples analyzed, 67 (93,1%) resulted in microbial growth, while 50 (69,4%) grew yeast Malassezia pachydermatis. The 101 isolated strains showed 27 (26,7%) Pseudomonas sp, 14 (13,9%) Streptococcus sp, 13 (12,9%) Escherichia coli, 11 (10,9%) Corynebacterium sp, 10 (9,9%) Staphylococci intermedius, 10 (9,9%) coagulase-negative Staphylococci, 8 (7,9%) Staphylococci aureus, 4 (4%) Proteus sp and 4 (4%) Bacillus sp. clinical changes included erythema in 30 ears (41.7%), 48 (66.7%) punctate bleeding, 54 (75%) erosions, 62 (86,1%) hyperemia, 52 (72,2%) edema, 66 (91,7%) cutaneous thickening, 20 (27,8%) hyperpigmentation, 28 (38,9%) calcification of cartilage, 52 (72,2%) periauricular abrasions, 22 (30,5%) partial stenosis, 19 (26,3%) exudates of brown color, 32 (44,4%) dark brown exudate, 24 (33,3%) yellow exudate, 50 (69.4%) heavy exudate, 20 (27,8%) moderate exudate, eight (11,1%) otohematoma, 32 (88,9%) pruritus, 36 (100 %) odor changed, nine (25%) hyperthermia, three (8,3%) pale mucous membranes, three (8,3%) dehydration take, nine (25%) inappetence, nine (25%) increased pre-parotid lymph node, five (13,9%) increased mandibular lymph node, 12 (33,3%) ear pain, five (13,9%) change in position of the ear, 32 (88,9%) agitation of the four (11,1%) ear and head tilt. The antibiogram testing 17 antibiotics indicated an efficacy higher than 70 % for the treatment of external otitis only when gentamicin, nemoncin, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, or tobramycin was present. The treatments using gentamicin, nemoncin, enrofloxacin end/or ciprofloxacin reached 92 % of complete recovery. In conclusion, gentamicin, nemoncin and enrofloxacin showed a better clinical efficiency for the treatment of external otitis. Being essentially a clinical evaluation and implementation of individual microbial culture and sensitivity to be adopted effective treatment, avoiding the chronicity and recurrence of disease.

description The external otitis is one of most common diseases affecting the auditory channel in dogs.
