The present research on Information Mediation and Usability in the interface of the Pergamum Catalog of the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS). The general objective of the research is to identify how the interface of the Integrated Library System Pergamum contributes to the mediation of the information of the users, understanding the application of usability as a resource for mediation. More precisely, to analyze how the mediation of information is developed in this environment and in what way the usability precepts contribute to the information mediation process. The specific objectives are: to evaluate the usability of the Pergamum system (user-interface) based on the heuristic "Visibility and recognition of the current state or context of the system"; understand the application of usability as a resource for the mediation of information; and understand the role of usability in the search and retrieval of information in digital information environments. Contextualizes research from information organization, information retrieval, information retrieval systems, online catalogs, interface evaluation, usability and mediation of information. The data were collected through the first heuristic evaluation of Jakob Nielsen, visibility and recognition of the current state or context of the system. Describes the test and methodological procedures. It presents and discusses the research results using the theoretical reference, the analysis and understanding with the mediation of the implicit proposal by Almeida Junior. Since the visibility and recognition of the current state or context of the system - is related to the design of the user interface. The results point to negative and positive points related to the usability of the catalog interface. It concludes that there are some technical impediments that hamper the progression to this type of ideal online recovery system. For these obstacles to be eliminated, tools and studies on information organization, information retrieval, information retrieval systems, online catalogs, and interface assessment need to be maximized to their full potential.
