Resumo: The theme of this research is Luther between politics and religion - a preliminary analysis of the theses defended in the document Disputatio pro declaratione virtutis indulgentiarum (1517). The field of study to which it is related is the History of Religions. The objective of this work is to analyze the bases that supported Luther's thought when defending the theses presented in the aforementioned document. To this end, the methodology applied consisted of a literature review on the subject, which was based on authors such as Gonzalez (1995); Rops (1996); Durant (2002); Lindberg (2017); Marshall (2017). It was concluded, therefore, that the Augustinian formation, the office of theologian and the confrontation with the real conditions faced in the sixteenth century by the Catholic Church, constitute the bases that supported Luther's thought when defending the 95 theses.
