The general objective of the research was to know the role of the social worker in mental health, in the context of dismantling public policies. An exploratory-descriptive study with a qualitative approach consisted of a bibliographic and documentary research. For data collection, books, magazines, articles, publications, academic works, laws and ordinances were used. Online publications were also used through referenced sites: Google Scholar, SciELO, CAPES Periodicals, Social Service & Society, with combinations of the keywords: dismantling of mental health policy; performance of the social worker; State counter-reform and mental health. The results showed that since 2016 there has been an accelerated process of dismantling public policies for the Psychiatric Reform in Brazil, with the underfunding of the mental health policy, the disrespect for the referrals of the Conferences, the investment of public funds in therapeutic communities, among others. Other measures imposed by the central government. Thus, the role of the social worker in the context of dismantling the mental health policy comes up against the defense of a return to the asylum model, the precariousness of the psychosocial care network and underfunding. Finally, it is up to society in general and the category of social workers in particular, the task of strengthening the channels of popular participation, such as councils and conferences, in order to face setbacks in the field of mental health.
