The comedy Lição de Botânica by Machado de Assis presents a baron, a botany researcher, who is manipulated by a young woman. The main objective is to analyze the presence of this female character, and how the comic is present in the play. The specific objectives are to present the comedy genre, the concepts of the comic according to Bergson (2018) and Freud (2006), as well as to analyze the comic present in the work. For this, a bibliographic study with a qualitative approach was necessary, on comedy, the comic, and on Machado's characters, from there analyzes and reflections were made on the text. The characters presented by Machado de Assis are women ahead of the time in which they live, they are intelligent to the point of being smart, the author presents a successful man who is even ridiculed, which one can see is an inversion. In an age of a patriarchal society, women dominate the entire play, including the Baron's decisions.
