Resumo: Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic inflammatory condition. It consists mainly of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, with a multifactorial character and negative impact on the individual's quality of life. The current drug treatment with aminosalicylates and corticosteroids, especially, has numerous side effects, which drives a search for other therapies. It is evidenced the evolution in the composition of the intestinal flora of patients with colitis. As was done, the objective of this work was to conduct a systematic review of the potential of problems in the prevention and treatment of the disease, using the PubMed and Bireme databases, limited to clinical trials in humans and animal testing. It was found that the genus Lactobacillus is the most studied and the one with the most positive results, followed by Bifidobacteria and Streptococcus. As probiotic doses, administered orally and / or rectally, which are able to demonstrate beneficial effects ranged from 1x107 to 2x107 CFU. However, further studies are necessary for its mechanisms of action, indication of use, dose-effet and best route of administration prior to its use as adjuncts to therapy and prevention of colitis.
