Resumo: INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a public health problem, but its diagnosis is inadequate, which leads to the high prevalence of osteoporotic fractures. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of osteoporotic fracture in the elderly and treatment indication using the clinical FRAX tool and NOGG methodology. METHODS: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study, with quantitative approach and convenience sampling of 79 elderly individuals followed in outpatient clinics of the teaching hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe, in Aracaju, Sergipe. Data collection was through a questionnaire that addresses the risk factors for osteoporosis and fractures. RESULTS: The study sample consisted of 79 elderly. The average age was 69.2 ± 7.02 years. Regarding gender 53 (67.1%) were women, compared to race, 61 (77.2%) non-white. Only 14 (17.7%) elderly reported having a diagnosis of osteoporosis. Regarding DXA, 27 (36%) had already undergone the examination. In our sample 47 (59.5%) of the participants should have been submitted to DXA by WHO criteria. Regarding FRAX, 20 (25.3%) elderly women had absolute risk for hip fractures and three (3.8%) risk for major fracture. Through the NOGG methodology 20 (25.3%) patients had indication of treatment and 9 (11.4%) had indication for treatment due to major fracture risk. CONCLUSION: Risk factors for osteoporosis and fractures are prevalent in the population studied. Using the calculators used, there was a reduction in DXA indication and detection of elderly people at high risk for fractures.
