Resumo: Introduction: Hospital admission for acute and chronic respiratory diseases can lead to functional decline, interfering with their pulmonary function, which may increase the morbidity and mortality of these individuals. Objective: Analyze muscle strength and the ability of hospitalized patients admitted for respiratory disorders. Methods: Cross sectional study conducted in patients diagnosed and hospitalized with acute or chronic respiratory diseases. Evaluations were performed using the Medical Research Council (MRC), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), World Health Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS), manovacuometry and hand grip dynamometry in patients admitted to the University Hospital of Lagarto. Results: A total of 97 patients were included in the analysis, observing a decrease in peripheral muscle strength. When PiMax was evaluated, values compatible with inspiratory muscle weakness were obtained. When analyzing functionality through WHODAS 2.0 and MIF, moderate functional difficulty was observed. By analyzing the correlation between the measured variables, a high and negative correlation was found between the variable Pmax and the variables Pmax, MRC (MMSS), FPP D and E (p <0.01). Regarding MEP, there was a high and positive correlation between the MRC (MMSS) and FPP D and E variables (p <0.01). By analyzing the relationship between MRC mean (MMSS) and FPP D and E, it was shown that there was a high and positive correlation (p <0.01) between them. There was a high and positive correlation (p <0.01) between MRC (MMII) and MRC (total) with FIM, and high and negative correlation with WHODAS (p <0.01). When checking the MIF and WHODAS functional variables, a high and negative correlation (p <0.01) was demonstrated. When comparing the mean FPP D and E, MRC (MMSS, MMII and Total) there was a difference between the groups above 60 years and below 60 years (p = 0.000), demonstrating that in the older groups the peripheral force was lower. Conclusion: There was a significant reduction in peripheral muscle strength and respiratory muscle strength with statistical significance when compared to the predicted, further demonstrating in the functionality aspect, a moderate decrease in activities.
