Resumo: Self-mutilation has been considered a dysfunctional way of dealing with problems with great emotional charge that the subject cannot express in words, for which he uses self-aggression as a form of expression. The probability of engaging in risky behaviors increases during adolescence, since at this stage of life, an emotional or behavioral disorder can occur, which modifies or alters the personal response to some physical and/or psychological risk. Some teenagers, faced with emotional conflicts, may see self-mutilation as a way of externalizing things on their skin that they cannot translate into words, thus making the anguish marked and perceived. The general objective of this research is to understand the meanings attributed by participants who presented/present the behavior of self-mutilation of the body in adolescence, as well as to identify the implications of the effects on the involvement in daily activities. Specific objectives: understand the meaning of this behavior for the subjects and identify the triggers that lead to self-mutilating behavior. This is a study with a qualitative and descriptive approach, carried out with adolescents who practice or practice self-mutilation during adolescence. The collection was carried out through a semi-structured questionnaire in a virtual way. It was possible to notice that the motivation for the practice of self-mutilation can have several functions, such as expressing emotions, reducing negative feelings and anguish, and alleviating all these sensations, which ends up interfering in the adolescents' involvement in their daily activities. It is observed that the role of the occupational therapist becomes relevant, as it provides care centered on the subject considering its uniqueness and potential, acting as a facilitator in the process of daily transformation.
