Avaliação do equilíbrio e risco de quedas em indivíduos com doença de Parkinson

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that has motor symptoms that can trigger postural instability and generate risk of falling in the individual. This study aims to evaluate the balance and fall risk of individuals with PD, to compare individuals with a history of falls in the last 6 months with those who do not, and to correlate the results of the tools used. The recruited PD subjects were assessed using the Hoehn and Yahr scale (H&Y) to assess disease staging, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG), and Sit-to-Stand Test (SST) to assess balance and risk of fall. The study presented results of BBS 51.2 ± 10.52 points, TUG 15.4 s ± 9.56 and SST 16.66 s ± 5.24, where individuals who had a history of falls in the last months and those who did not presented no significant statistical difference in BBS (p = 0.17) and TUG (p = 0.32), but presented in SST (p = 0.03). A strong correlation was found between TUG and BBS (rs = -0.66), regular correlation between TUG and TSL (rs = 0.53) and BBS and SST (rs = -0.54), and poor correlation between H&Y and the other tools. Individuals with PD presented balance deficit and risk of mild to moderate fall. It was concluded that individuals with history of risk of falls in the last 6 months only presented statistically significant difference in TSL with those without history. The level of disease staging did not significantly influence the results of the tools used.
