Resumo: Environmental Education (EA) is a theoretical and practical tool that has the function of provoking the critical reflection of the subjects about their reality and sensitizing them to the changes in habits, attitudes and practices that aim at building a sustainable society. The objective of this study is centered on to analyze, through a bibliographic study, what is missing for EE practices in elementary education to contribute to the formation of citizens and agents for social transformation. The study was based on a bibliographic review, available in the literature, whose guiding question was: “It is known that Environmental Education (EE) promotes students' awareness of sustainable values and practices and environmental conservation, but why is there still no development of effective practices in schools?" The search occurred through articles published between 2001 and 2019, in the databases: Scientific Electronic Library (SciELLO), RI / UFS (Institutional Repository of the Federal University of Sergipe) and Google Scholar. The categories found were: Concepts of EA aspects, EA Practices and Sustainable Development. In view of the results, it was possible to conclude that EE practices collaborate to build a sustainable society by promoting changes in attitudes, values and the understanding that we are agents of social transformation.

O objetivo deste estudo está centrado em analisar, através de um estudo bibliográfico, o que falta para que as práticas de EA no ensino fundamental contribuam com a formação de cidadãos e agentes para a transformação social. O estudo foi feito a partir de revisão bibliográfica, disponíveis na literatura, cuja questão norteadora foi: “É sabido que a Educação Ambiental (EA) promove a sensibilização dos alunos para valores e práticas sustentáveis e de conservação ambiental, mas por que ainda não ocorre o desenvolvimento de práticas efetivas nas escolas?” A busca ocorreu por meio de artigos publicados entre 2001 e 2019, nas bases de dados: Scientific Electronic Library (SciELLO), RI/UFS (Repositório Institucional da Universidade Federal de Sergipe) e Google Acadêmico. As categorias encontradas foram: Concepções das vertentes da EA, Práticas de EA e Desenvolvimento Sustentável.
