Resumo: The article aims to discuss the historical process of struggle of rural social movements in Latin America and the construction of the concept of Rural Education. Built from bibliographical research and anchored in the principles of construction of historical knowledge through the traces left by the past. We chose to approach movements that had similar agendas of struggles: the struggle for land, for agrarian reform and for education, encountering Zapatismo in Mexico and the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) in Brazil. Social inequalities and poor land distribution led to conflicts between peasants and landowners, different development projects for the countryside, and Rural Education arises as a reflection of the struggle of social movements for quality public education for rural peoples.

Construído a partir de pesquisa bibliográfica e ancorado nos princípios de construção do conhecimento histórico através dos vestígios deixados pelo passado. Optou-se por abordar movimentos que tinham pauta de lutas semelhantes: a luta pela terra, pela reforma agrária e pela educação, encontrando o Zapatismo no México e o Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) no Brasil.
