The city of São Cristóvão, located in the state of Sergipe, stands out in the preservationist field for the singularity and significance of its public spaces and buildings, which add historical, archaeological, architectural etc. value to the city and led it to be recognized as a World Heritage Site for its São Francisco Square. However, the city has been through difficult times, since the discontent with the cultural scene has discouraged its artists and population, showing that the sense of belonging of the São Cristóvão citizens is clearly shaken. With that in mind, this research seeks to understand the factors that led to the distancing between the community and the city’s cultural heritage, based on interviews with local cultural agents. Through the analysis of these interviews, it was possible to come up with some ways of minimizing that distancing and make the population's awareness of the city’s heritage rise in an easy and productive way, as well as suitable for the local reality. The work was based on public archeology’s bias, which aims to break down barriers between the scientific and the popular in order to build a socially engaged archeology.
