Resumo: Breno Accioly (Santana do Ipanema/Alagoas, 1921 – Rio de Janeiro/Rio de Janeiro, 1966) entered the Brazilian literary scene in late 1944 with the short-story collection João Urso. Very well received by the critics, this work was highly praised in periodicals of the time. Authors like Mário de Andrade, José Lins do Rego, Lúcio Cardoso, Sérgio Milliet and Roger Bastide commented on Accioly's writing. In addition, the volume won the Graça Aranha award, from the Graça Aranha Foundation, and the Afonso Arinos award, from the Brazilian Academy of Letters. The writer, who had surrounded himself with renowned friends, such as Graciliano Ramos, Lêdo Ivo, Mauro Mota and Gilberto Freyre, was forgotten over the years. He published four other books, Cogumelos (1949, short stories), Maria Pudim (1955, short stories), Dunas (1955, novel) and Os Cata-ventos (1962, short stories), but none of them was as successful as his debut work. The present research focuses on João Urso (1944). In order to understand the importance of the said work and its writer to Brazilian literature, this study investigates the ten narratives that make up the volume. It is necessary, however, to present first the bio-bibliographical profile of the writer, whose notoriety escapes the contemporary reader, and, based on the typology established by Genette (2018), examine the four editions — and the entire paratextual elements (covers, preface, dedications and epigraphs) — that the work has won to the present date. For the analysis of narrative voices, the main topic of the second chapter of this dissertation, the foundation lies in the studies of Friedman (2002), Leite (1987), Carvalho (2012) and Dal Farra (1978). Finally, another goal is to investigate, in the short story “João Urso”, the characterization of the space from which the narrator sees and presents the main character of the narrative. This approach is supported by the studies of Brandão (2013), Lins (1976), Blanchot (2011) and Gomes (2008).
