Tipos de Tipo em uma comunidade de práticas universitária

Tipo is inserted in a set of discourse markers usually associated with ―vices of language‖ or informal marks, and it has been more and more frequent in the innovative uses in speech. From the linguistic point of view, these innovative uses are legitimate, play a social role, as the sociolinguistic theory advocates, and are regular as the constructional approach advocates. This study aims at describing the different uses of tipo as different types of different linguistic categories, as well as the relation of these types to a more formal or more informal linguistic style. For that, our theoretical framework is the constructional approach (CROFT, 2001; TRAUGOTT; TROUSDALE, 2013), associated with the control of the style dimension in the perspective of Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 2008 [1972]; LABOV, 2001; BELL, 1984; BELL, 2001). A sample of the speech of the community of practice Research Group on Physical Education was established, enabling the observation beyond the linguistic features to the description of the different uses of tipo and of stylistic features as well in order to verify the influence of the alternation between more formal and more informal styles in these uses. Then, we transcribed the data collected, extracted all the tokens of tipo, classified them according to the specified categories, and submitted each type identified to a descriptive statistical analysis to compute its token frequency. In relation to the results of the linguistic aspects, we verified: that tipo may come as a plural only in the nominal category undergoing a morphological change of loss of this feature in its new types; that tipo has distinct syntactic properties in its uses of the three categories, having in the nominal scheme the syntactic scope of a noun phrase, in the category connector scope of linkage among noun phrases, linkage among clauses, and linkage between noun phrases and clauses in a nominal form, and in the category discourse marker the property of being syntactically independent; and that tipo has distinct semantic-pragmatic values too in its different uses, having a classification value as type of the category noun, of comparison and exemplification in the category connector, and the semantic-pragmatic values of introduction of internal dialogue, verbal planning, approximate delimitation, emphasis, and intra-topic articulation in the category discourse marker. Regarding the stylistic effects, concerning the conversational situation factor, we observed that the members of the community displayed more use of the types of the categories connector and discourse marker in the situation of induced interaction, the most favorable to the emergency of its spontaneous speech, and this use decreases as the formality of the situation increases. Concerning the kind of topic, we observed that the uses of the categories connector and discourse marker were more frequent when the topics were more intimate for the speakers (more speaker‘s involvement), in relation to the topics they approach in a more distant way (less speaker‘s involvement), while the type of the nominal scheme presented very little distinction of use among the kinds of subject in controlled situations. In addition the description of the uses of tipo in an approach which grants the same relevance to its characteristics of form and meaning, the results of this study evidence that types and tokens of tipo are sensitive to the stylistic effects that interfere in its frequency, which reinforces the need to consider stylistic aspects in the study of constructions and of the constructionalization process.
