Resumo: | Constipation is a common disorder in the pediatric population and, in Brazil corresponds to a prevalence of 14.7% to 38.8%. Early weaning can be considered a risk factor to the development of constipation due to the changes in the infant´s evacuation pattern. In childhood, many of the complaints can indicate the presence of eating disturbances, such as food refusal, lack of appetite, child lack of interest in food, crying or agitation at meals time, behavior to avoid food intake, different food preparation for children and prolonged mealtimes, resulting in a restricted variety of foods consumed and a nutritionally unbalanced diet, especially with a low fiber dietary content. Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of functional constipation and its association with nutritional status, early weaning and eating behavior in preschoolers. Methods: Cross-sectional study involving 1051 children enrolled in public and private schools in the state of Sergipe, aged between 2 and 6 years. Nutritional status was evaluated by measuring weight, height, skin folds, arm and waist circumference. Rome IV criteria was used to characterize functional intestinal constipation. Eating behavior was assessed using a validated questionnaire Child Eating Behavior - CEBQ, answered by their parents or guardians. Results: from total amount, 242 (23%) children were diagnosed with functional constipation. Age, gender, socioeconomic status and anthropometric parameters data did not differ statistically between groups. Constipated children showed that they did not like drinking water and did not have the habit of asking for water frequently (p <0.001, p <0.001, respectively). Children who liked to drink water were less likely to have constipation (OR: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.18-0.37). The multivariable analysis showed that children with food selectivity and those who used dairy compound / cow's milk, infant formula and mixed breastfeeding in the first semester of life, were more likely to have functional constipation (OR: 6.65 ; 95% CI: 5.19-8.52, OR: 15.21; 95% CI: 8.21-28.18, OR: 7.14; 95% CI: 4.42-11.55, OR: 7, 06; 95% CI: 3.66-13.63, respectively). Conclusion: A high prevalence of functional intestinal constipation was observed among Preschoolers in the state of Sergipe. Food selectivity and early weaning were independent risk factors for functional constipation in schoolchildren from this study. There was no association between the nutritional status and functional intestinal constipation in these children. |

There was no association between the nutritional status and functional intestinal constipation in these children.
