Diagnóstico e aplicação de indicadores de sustentabilidade em cooperativas de materiais recicláveis dos municipios de Boquim, Riachão do Dantas e Simão Dias

The issue of proper treatment and final disposal of solid waste in Brasil has been discussed for years, but much still needs to be done to improve the national scenario. With the prediction of the closure of landfills recycling cooperatives and selective collection agents have gained space in negotiations with municipalities, obtaining support and enabling the execution of their activities. In this context, this study carried out a diagnosis of the current situation of recyclable material cooperatives in the Sergipe municipalities of Boquim, Riachão do Dantas and Simão Dias, as well as evaluating the selective collection service in the municipalities and the cooperatives themselves through sustainability indicators. The study methodology employed a direct approach contacting the representatives of each cooperative, in addition to the use of their official documents. The indicator selection process identified the Degree of Sustainability and the Sustainability Radar for use in this work. The results obtained made it possible to carry out the following orders for the Degree of Sustainability of the Municipalities: Boquim (medium sustainability) > Riachão do Dantas (low sustainability) = Simão Dias (low sustainability); while the Selective Collection Sustainability Radar sorted as: Riachão do Dantas (very favorable) > Boquim (favorable and very favorable) = Simão Dias (favorable and very favorable). Regarding the situation of the cooperatives (COOCMARB, COCARD and COOCAMAR) the Sustainability Radar of Waste Pickers' Organizations revealed a very close scenario that corresponded to a favorable situation for all. Although the cooperatives have different structures and facilities, their performance measured by the proposed indicators are similar, what has the most negative impact on the indicators is the question of the amount of recyclable mass by the cooperatives, that is, actions to increase the uptake of the material are necessary in the municipalities. On the other hand, as a general positive point is the wide collection coverage in the urban area. Thus, the study was able to verify through indicators which aspects impact, positively and negatively, the selective collection in the investigated municipalities and their cooperatives, besides evaluating actions capable of improving the selective collection service.
