This exploratory and descriptive research aimed to verify the technical and behavioral competencies expected of hospital secretarial professionals. The general objective was to analyze these competencies from the perception of leaders and secretaries of a health segment organization, of high complexity, located in Aracaju, Sergipe. The steps of the investigation were: to verify the principles and scenario of hospital management; to verify the elements that constitute competence in the organizational and individual scope; to identify the activities performed by the secretary of the investigated organization; and to analyze the competencies that involve the work of the hospital secretary in that organization. To this end, a qualitative approach was used with data collection through questionnaire and interview. The results indicate that in the researched environment, the technical and behavioral competencies expected of a secretarial professional who works in hospital management are knowledge of work tools, as well as good communication and interpersonal relationships. It was also obtained that the perception of hospital managers about the Secretariat was that it is an extremely important activity, supporting the work of high hierarchical positions.
