This research, inserted in the main theme and Information and Society (DCI / UFS), deals with the Provincial Public Library of Sergipe, today Public Library EpifânioDória, in its first phase of operation corresponding to the time interval between 1848 and 1890. Specifically, will study about its creation and the formation process of its collection in the indicated temporality. To get to the specificity of the subject, in the first place, it was approached, in a panoramic way, the origin of libraries and, in particular, of public libraries in their "path guardian" of knowledge records. Also in this section, we presented the theoretical framework of the theory of Collection Development, an important theme for understanding the strategies used in the formation of the Library collection in its period of installation. Then, briefly, focus is on the provincial public libraries in Brazil, as preserving places of the institutional memory of the national identity. Later, contextualized to Sergipe d’El Rey Province, during the second half of the XIX century, a period which corresponded to the development of the local Provincial Library and, finally, were presented the first works that figured in the collection of this information unit, the ways of acquiring these, and Sergipe personalities who contributed to the formation of its collection.
