Resumo: | Introduction: The increasing biological knowledge about the potentialities of the dentin-pulp complex associated with the advent of bioactive materials with better physical properties has supported a recent trend towards greater implementation of conservative treatments. However, doubts still exist regarding the long-term clinical success of vital pulp therapies (VPTs). The aim of this study is to review in the literature the clinical success of VPTs and the factors that interfere with favorable outcomes of these therapies. Methodology: The present study was constructed as a descriptive literature review including only clinical studies in patients who had undergone direct pulp capping and partial and total pulpotomies. The literature search was conducted in the PubMed database covering English-language scientific articles published between 2013 and 2023 that evaluated the success rate of these treatments in carious permanent teeth. Literature Review: Based on the inclusion criteria, 27 scientific articles were selected. The combined analysis of the studies demonstrated high average success rates of direct pulp capping (90.3%), partial pulpotomy (86.7%), and total pulpotomy (90.1%), with no association with gender and age. Regarding the treatment protocol, there was a greater tendency towards the use of sodium hypochlorite in its various concentrations as an irrigating and hemostatic agent for all therapies. Additionally, the use of MTA as a lining material also appeared to be quite predominant in most studies. Conclusion: Thisbibliographic survey aggregated clinical studies on vital pulp therapies to facilitate study and contribute to encouraging professionals and guiding clinical decisions for the use of this treatment modality. |
