Conhecimento de endodontistas, odontopediatras e clínicos gerais sobre pulpotomia em dentes permanentes no estado de Sergipe

In the context of minimally invasive dentistry, pulpotomy has been indicated to treat permanent teeth diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis, becoming an important alternative, mainly to manage first permanent molars early affected by deep carious lesion in young patients. In face of this possibility, the level of knowledge of professionals about these concepts is questioned, as well as if this treatment has been performed on their daily routine. This study aimed to assess the treatment used by dentists from the Sergipe state for the treatment of carious permanent teeth in young and adult patients as well as to compare the costs between pulpotomy and pulpectomy at these cases. A questionnaire containing 24 objective questions was elaborated and personally or electronically sent to general, pediatric dentists and endodontists from Sergipe State. Data was obtained from 138 questionnaires and the answers were described in tables. It was observed that about half (51,45%) of the sample does not perform pulpotomy in permanent teeth of children until 12 years old, and only 21,01% from the professionals applied this therapy in adults. Furthermore, more than 90% would not indicate this therapy in teeth diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis. Regarding irrigation solution and the reparative material used during pulpotomy, most of them mentioned to use saline (61,59%) and Calcium Hydroxide (79,71%), respectively. In addition, pulpotomy showed to be more accessible when compared to pulpectomy in molars, with more than half of professionals (64,49%) reporting to charge between R$ 100 to 500 for pulpotomy, while the costs with the pulpectomy varied more frequently between R$ 501 to 700 (35,51%) and more than R$ 901 (26,81%). Accordingly, it was possible to quantify the knowledge and opinion related to pulpotomy of the professionals and this information may encourage the development of strategies to spread this new technique in Dentistry, making it an viable, simple, low cost and minimally invasive approach to avoid premature tooth loss in young patients.
