Female pattern hair loss (from English: female pattern hair loss - FPHL) is a disease that affects many women in any high age group, its prevalence as age advances. FPHL is characterized by a change in the capillary cycle, with a shortening in the duration of the anagen phase increasing hair loss. For the treatment of this condition, minoxidil is one of the treatment options, it is a drug already recognized in the literature and used to treat female hair loss. It works by improving circulation in the area, stimulating and prolonging the phase of hair growth. This review aimed to assess the efficacy of minoxidil in the treatment of FPHL and the possible adverse effects. A search was made in the scientific databases: Pubmed, Lilacs, Scielo, and Scopus, from 2011 to March 21, 2021 (date of the final survey). Randomized clinical trials and pilot studies comparing the use of Minoxidil with placebo or with another treatment were included. Minoxidil has been shown to be effective in treatment and has few adverse effects. However, more studies with longer follow-up times are needed to better observe the effectiveness and studies with different concentrations to assess whether the effectiveness remains and reduces adverse effects.
