The conception of columns is one of the most delicate phases of a structural project. The bad positioning of these elements, or even a bad evaluation of the dimensioning, can lead to several problems, such as structures that do not satisfy the service conditions or even an increase in the total cost of the work. Because it is an element linked to the collapse of a structure, there are cases of building collapse that were caused by a commitment in the columns. A problem that can cause loss of stability of the columns is the use of concrete with a characteristic strength lower than that specified in the project. Obviously, the reduction in strength infers a loss in load capacity, implying a possible reduction in safety coefficients. Thus, the present work makes the dimensioning of the structural reinforcement in a reinforced concrete central column that suffered loss of load capacity for not having reached the characteristic strength at the time of execution, determining the areas of steel and concrete to be added so that the element performs its function in a stable and safe way. Also, it gathers the procedures to be followed so that the execution of the reinforcement attends the dimensioning.
